What Is Mental Arithmetic with an Abacus?

Mental Arithmetic is a tested method of developing a child’s academic abilities and creative thinking in a balanced way, allowing them to reach their full intellectual potential.

At the beginning of the course, an abacus is used for children to learn the necessary techniques. Later on, children learn to do calculations in their head by forming a mental image of a number on the abacus and can do all mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with any numbers in mind.

Online mental arithmetic classes at Abakus cost from €22 per lesson on the annual plan (96 lessons). A 3-month plan with 24 lessons costs €593. Longer plans include gift months of lessons, and every plan includes 1-to-1 lessons with a teacher and access to the Abakus online platform.

From what age can a child start mental arithmetic?

A child can start mental arithmetic from 5 years old. Our programme is designed for children aged 5 to 12, and the teacher adapts lessons to your child's age and level.

Is the first lesson free?

Yes. The first lesson is a free individual trial lesson with a professional teacher. During the lesson, the teacher assesses your child's level and gives personal recommendations, with no obligation to buy a plan.

How long does the mental arithmetic course take?

The full Abakus mental arithmetic course takes about 2.5 years and covers Levels 0 to 5. Each lesson lasts 25 minutes, and your child also practises on the Abakus online platform between lessons.

Can my child learn abacus mental maths online from the UK or Ireland?

Yes. All Abakus lessons take place online, so your child can learn abacus mental maths from the UK, Ireland or any other country. All you need is a computer or tablet with an internet connection.
